Kettlebell Training
This valueable class will teach you how to supercharge your cardiovascular system, develop amazing strength, and put your metabolism in overdrive all with one versatile piece of equipment that is the Kettlebell.
What is a ‘kettlebell’?
A ‘kettlebell’ or girya (Russ.) is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. The ultimate tool for extreme all-around fitness.
The kettlebell goes way back, it first appeared in a Russian dictionary in 1704 (Cherkikh, 1994). So popular were kettlebells in Tsarist Russia that any strongman or weightlifter was referred to as a girevik, or ‘a kettlebell man’.
“Not a single sport develops our muscular strength and bodies as well as kettlebell athletics,” reported Russian magazine Hercules in 1913.
Why train with kettlebells?
Because they deliver extreme all-around fitness. And no single other tool does it better. Here is a short list of hardware the Russian kettlebell replaces: barbells, dumbbells, belts for weighted pullups and dips, thick bars, lever bars, medicine balls, grip devices, and cardio equipment.
Kettlebells melt fat without the dishonor of dieting or aerobics. If you are overweight, you will lean out. If you are skinny, you will get built up. According to Voropayev (1997) who studied top Russian gireviks, 21.2% increased their bodyweight since taking up kettlebelling and 21.2% (the exact same percentage, not a typo), mostly heavyweights, decreased it. The Russian kettlebell is a powerful tool for fixing your body composition, whichever way it needs fixing.
Class Information
The beginner Kettlebell (KB) class will discuss and teach the two basic, foundational KB exercises which are the swings and Turkish Get Ups. Each session will end with a short-workout to give you an idea how you can work with KBs at home. If you haven’t worked with a certified kettlebell instructor before, you are considered a beginner even if you have worked with KBs in the past.
The advanced kettlebell class is for people who have taken the beginner class and will teach you the rest of the KB exercises such as high pulls, cleans, presses, and, last but definitely not the least, snatches.
The class consists of 4 1-hour sessions or 2 1-hour sessions for smaller groups on Sundays. The next class starts on July 18th. New students can only enroll at the beginning of each session.
Each session will vary but you would be proficient in the two KB exercises by the end of the 4 sessions when you take the beginner class. KB exercises are very technical and if they are done incorrectly, you can injure yourself. However, if you do them correctly and in perfect form, the benefits to your fitness and overall physique (weight loss, increased metabolism, etc.) are simply amazing.
You will surely get the most bang for your time in terms of calories spent compared to running or strength training because you are combining strength and conditioning all in one, short workout.
